Today (4/24/12) was our first day without the Roses. They were back to work. But they suggested we take the Wagon Ride and the Carriage Ride. Below is Bigfoot in our peaceful pine tree site.
The mornings have been a little chilly-willy. Gramma exits wearing her winter hat. Under her black coat is her violet jacket. She'll need the layers (a survival technique we learned in Idaho) until the day warms up.
We got tickets for the first wagon ride of the morning. In an hour ride pulled by these huge draft horses we will see many historic sites while a narrator tells about Nauvoo.
They make big quilts available on cold days
Gramma is in the very first row behind the driver. Avery good place to see everything.
There is one big problem being so close to the rear of these horses. See the big poop bags behind each horse? We found out that was so the horses don't leave a mess/smell on the streets. Have you ever seen such things on horses? Anyway they seem to work.
As we go by the many restored buildings, the "Site Missionaries", as they are called, come out and wave.
Becca accepted the invitation at the end of the ride to pet the horses. She loves horses.
Between rides we saw some other things. Here Papa is by a display of a "Sunstone" decoration which was saved from the exterior of the original Nauvoo Temple.
Surrounding the Visitors Center are well kept gardens. Here is a stunning scarlet tulip.
The sign in front of this site tells it all
After the demonstration, we got a couple of souvenir bricks, actually fired in their kiln.
The afternoon ride is called a "Carriage Ride", a different sort of wagon pulled by another set of hefty horses.
This time the ride was out into the country side. Again, an interesting narrator informs and entertain during the ride. The afternoon has warmed up and we shed a few layers
At the end, Becca enjoys getting up close and personal with the horses. This guy's name is Max. On both rides Becca was the only passenger to want to pet the horses. It touches my heart to see how she confidently but carefully approaches these giant beasts to say hello
It was a happy day. Tomorrow is our last day in Nauvoo. So, some chores will be on our to-do list
