...without making any noise." This is a quote from Gramma about finding stuff in the Family History Library. Today we were in that section of the Lawton Public Library.
Gramma was helping me research my family history through Nana's line. Here is the fun I had today:
In the Land Records microfilm we found the property of Andy James, my great grandfather (Nana's grandfather). Over the years 1897-1901, Andy amassed 160 acres in Section 19, Township 1, Range 19 in Tillman County, Oklahoma. Now the real fun part for me was finding out where that is now. There was a terrific library clerk, Mary Lou, who helped us. She got out a well worn atlas size book and opened it up. The huge pages were filled with tiny squares and even smaller words and symbols, unintelligible to most humans. She found the property, sadly telling me I didn't own any of it.
But here it is--those 160 acres are SE of Altus, About halfway between Tipton and Headrick on the Red River, where many cattle drives from Texas came across at Doan's Crossing. Story is that some of the James boys had something to do with that business.
Our feeling is that this is the land where Nana, my and Aunt Catherine's and Aunty Pat's Mom was born is 1907. Very cool!
Two more things. Old folk might know the western song Red River Valley. That's where our peeps are from. Secondly, Mary Lou is a member of the church. Those Mormons have genealogy skills!
Tomorrow we may try to drive to that area.
