Day six of our AMJ Roadtrip

Greetings from The Great Plains Oklahoma State Park at Tom Steed Reservoir

This our site. Almost as nice as the AOK Camping Park last night was run down

We have full hook ups (some of you know this is good) with a water view out our front door and today wonderful weather and a cool breeze. We will stay here 3 nights while we do our family history work.

For those of you following us on a map, here is today's summary: We left Amarillo (and the AOK park which gave Gramma the heebyjeebies) about 7 this morning going east on I40. Btw it's still dark at that time. From Flagstaff I40 has been our route east. We were in heavy fog for a long time. When it lifted Gramma commented how relieved she was to be able to see where we were going. I said that is a kernel of a church talk comparing it to the mists darkness. On exit 163 we left I40 at Shamrock, TX (home of the Fighting Irish) and went south on Hwy 83. At Hwy 62 we went east out of TX into Oklahoma (where the wind comes sweeping down the plains). That took us through Altus, OK, a town which plays a part in our family history. When we reached Hwy 183 we went north again until we reached this park. We have seen many towns proud of their "Route 66" history. Below there is an old building that has been preserved.

John Deere is alive and well in this part of the world. Working tractors often travel along the highways.

Sadly, we have seen evidence of the country's hard times. Many building are boarded up and abandoned. We recognized Burger Kings and Sonics that apparently went under.

Our hwy here. Actually, we were in this very park on our trip in '07 going to Florida. We found the old Francis Cemetery where Annie Lou and my brother James Houston Baker (b Nov 31, dmar 24 35) are buried. We hope to find it again. If we do, I'll post photos.
