This a picture of a bird that we found in the bushes near our car when we came out of Wal*Mart. Birds are not very easy to take pictures of. They usually don't allow you to get very close. This is a fairly large bird that neither of us had ever seen before.
This is meant to be a family game. As a family I would like you to form a plan together to find out what kind of bird this is. Then in the comments report back on not only the name of the bird but what your family did to find it. This then is an exercise where my children teach their children how to find out something they do not know. The next picture may give away its name but remember we are trying to learn about research.
Deadline for reporting back is next Family Home Evening--Next Sunday or Monday.

Beep! Beep!, We think it is a road runner.
We think it is a road runner. Jenny (my GT child) said to google an image of it. We did and sure enough the pictures we found were just like your picture. How cool! We have never seen a real road runner before, just in the cartoon Road Runner. Fun activity!!!!
Well, the second image gave us the same guess as everyone else. We think it is a road runner. We also had the same idea as Jenny to look on Google for an image, but only because we had seen the second image, without it this would have been much harder to figure out.

Cathy, You showed that you are a good teacher. You understood the instructions. Having Jenny check it out was a good choice. I went to the internet too. I thought Dad's pictures were better than the ones i saw there. None of the pictures really give you the idea of what the feathers looked like. There were light ones and dark ones and they kind of rolled together around the shoulders and neck of the bird.
Kelly, You are right that the first picture doesn't look like a roadrunner as much as the second one does. This one was just walking around near the car then when we got closer he started to run. He stretched out his neck and his tail went up and down and he raised the "comb" on top of his head. He actually got taller. That really reminded me of the cartoon.

Also Mom, did you know that when you click on the images to see the larger version that the internet address bar shows the name of the image? In this case both photos were saved with the name of the bird, roadrunner. This would probably be the simpliest way for us to have guessed what you already knew.
Hint: next game you had better name the images more carefully so as not to give it away. :)
Today I saw a TV travel show on Kauai. In it I saw a NeNe Goose. The feathers on its neck were just like the ones on this bird. Very interesting. No one has mentioned the LARGE EYE. I think it is a trick. I think those are just white feathers that are made to "look like" the white of his eye. MOM
Road runner. Let me know if you find these fat, quail looking birds there that are called "Chuckers." They used to jump our fence in Fort Irwin and eat our grass seed. Pesky buggers.
We suspected right away that these might be Road Runners. We had the benefit of having visited Needles and hearing your account of what they looked like. Good job to all the researchers! To be thorough we did look up some Road Runner pictures on Google images to confirm our suspicion.
